In my College Prep English class, we are currently reading Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. Today we discussed the advances of science over centuries, and touched on the topics of Stem Cell research, Dolly the Sheep, and the invention of the atomic bomb. We were asked if those scientists went too far.
Personally I don’t believe that science can really “go too far” Now don’t get me wrong, I believe that the atomic bomb was drastic and maybe unnecessary. BUT we did get new atomic/ nuclear technology off that principle. So I believe that since it is just a cultural acceptance, we shouldn’t judge scientists that use stem cells to try to cure cancer. I also thought that other scientists were the “black sheep” of their times. They went against what is accepted.
Then my teacher started talking about the doctor who started studying corpses for medical purposes, and Copernicus who proposed a Heliocentric universe. They went against society and did things that were “wrong”
Where would we be without them?!?! We would think that the world was flat, we were the center of the universe, and our average life expectancy would be about 40 because of all the preventable diseases we would succumb to.
This may be against your beliefs, and I would LOVE to hear your points, but I am just stating my point on this, that I believe we should keep researching. We should also learn about these things, because it is science, and how can you fear and complain about science you don’t know anything about. BE INFORMED!!!
